Wow - so you were spying on the child.

Nice.

Well, I bust my little cuzos chops on social networking sites all the time and ain't much I can do when their mama is their facebook friend and don't say nothing about the pictures of them but I still try....

Hypothetically and sensitively speaking......

Your coworker's wife has a miscarriage after carrying the baby for 16 weeks. Coworker has the baby cremated. Coworker sends out an email explaining the hurt he is feeling and that he is going to take some time off work to spend with his wife and their children. You totally understand that. Toward the end of the email, coworker says he wants to take the remains and turn them into a Life Gem which is one of those diamonds created using the carbon remains of your loved one. The email then asks you to donate money so he can surprise his wife with the ring..email states he is not going to tell his wife about the ring until he gets enough money for it. From your looking at the website, the smallest diamond like 0.20 carat is $3500 and that's not including the setting. A 1.0 carat diamond is $20,000 again..without the setting. You office's standard "unwritten" policy is that you all take up a collection and flowers are purchased for the family member and the remaining money is given to the coworker to do whatever. When someone dies, the office generally raises anywhere from $100 to $150 or so depending on who is in the office when the collection is raised.

Now, you feel like the email was distasteful in asking for money...am I out of line for thinking the email was distasteful? A Life Gem is a personal decision and if you want to buy one, you should do it on your own dime. Said coworker has a "questionable" history in the office and perhaps that has a lot to do with your thing. This "questionable" history has a lot to do with adding overtime on the time card and other stuff and "questionable" behavior considering the type of office you work in. Regardless....am I hypothetically out of line for thinking the email was distasteful????

I'm sorry for his loss but arah.... That's a lotta chedda to shell out. I'd say the 2nd part was distasteful (not to mention trife) in that he would ask folks to come outta their pocket to that degree. For me, God forbid something would happen to one of my relatives, I could not put a price on that loss.

Thank you! I thought I might have been rude but I thought the idea to send that out was trifling...

That seems very inappropriate for work. I wonder if the higher ups will call him out about that. What nerve.
